There were doors all the way down this corridor. One said GYM on it. Several read NO ENTRY TO UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS. Then, incongruously, she came to a door with a picture of a giraffe on it. Only one door, however, had a policeman sitting outside it, reading a book. He stood up as she approached and took a step sideways to bar the door itself.

“I’m Billy’s mother,” she said.

“I need to see your pass,” said the man, and she showed it to him. “Yes, you can visit, but I think he’s sleeping.”

“That’s OK,” said Rachel. “I’ll just look at him.”

She went in. The room was bigger than she’d expected and white like the inside of her imaginary spaceship. Billy was tiny in his bed. He had purple bags under his eyes, and his hair was knotted, but his breathing was even, and at least he was safe.

Henry had said Billy was going to have to stand up in court, accused of murder. He had said it would happen next year. Rachel couldn’t think about it. When she tried to imagine it, it was like looking into the sun. She couldn’t do it.

For now, she was here, at Billy’s side, and so life was not so different from the way it had been when he was ill. He lay there, and she sat beside his bed and stared at him and tried very hard not to think ahead.
